You are dead on bro...I was fortunate to have requested an instructor and what you stated is exactly what the instructor will tell you...
I don't think there must more to add other than be patient.

great advise! Not only should you check your tires and brakes, but make sure that all loose items are left at home. You don't want to have to unload as much junk as I did. Anything that can be propelled while you're driving could cause damage or injury.
Finally, make sure that you have the right air pressure in your tires. I ran 32 PSI in the front and 36 PSI in the rear as a recommendation by my instructor. Yours may be different based on the type of car you drive...
