im a beginner... looking to get a newbie bike to learn and to get to work... also to take to the canyons...
my CHP instructors told us not to buy a used bike due to all the wear and damages that the used dealer dont tell us... soo i have narrow down to four bikes
2007 Yamaha YZF R6
2007 Kawasaki Ninja ZX 6R
2007 Suzuki GSXR600 or 750

I'm not the only rider on this board...hopefully you'll get some more good feedback from AG Surfer, Asian Image and I'm sure there are many others with some good experience (Shift26, I think we've met before way back in the Socalsportbikes original days...). I've posted my thoughts before about buying a new bike like this for your first one. I personally wouldn't do it. If you are set on buying new then buy a smaller bike (new) to start. A Ninja 250 is always a great starter as is the new Kawi 650 and Suzuki SV series...
As far as the difference between the two, it's really about personal preference these days. As a new rider I can guarantee that you will not be able to come anywhere near the performance limits of these bikes so if you do decide to get one, just go and sit on them and see which is more comfy/fits YOU better and then also decide which one you like the looks of better... Basically you can't go wrong with either.
For me, if I was buying a track bike, I'd probably buy the R6 b/c that's what it is best for. The new Kawi is probably a *slightly better street bike given the ever so slightly more usable powerband...but not by much.
Either way, ride safe and SMART! Don't let your ego get the best of you and don't assume that you know what you are doing b/c you can control the basics on the bike... Staying healthy on a bike as a new rider is about riding within YOUR limits at all times... It takes the experience of near misses and riding at YOUR limits (successfully) in order to get better. Most new riders think they know what they are doing faster than they really do...sure recipe for disaster!
Ok, off the soapbox now. I hope my feedback was somewhat useful. Ride Safe and BUY THE BEST GEAR THAT YOU CAN AFFORD, don't just spend all of your cash on a new bike!
