Here's our initial steps to determine the cause of the failure:

1. Boot your PC on "Safe Mode" by pressing F8 (key maybe different on other PC builds).
2. Once it boots, right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage".
3. Expand "System Tools".
4. Expand "Event Viewer".
5. Click on "Application" and check for the last "Error" state before it rebooted. If you don't see any error at the time the crash occurence then go to step 6.
6. Click on "System" and check for the last "Error" state before it rebooted.

Once you found the failure, make a screenshot and post it for further analysis.

On safe Mode-Here are my choices: ms windows xp home edition or ms windows recovery console. I never get to the my computer part.

Hey Gents,

Well, I have a similar problem. I have an HP Compaq desktop that just shuts off for no reason. I can boot it up and as long as I don't logon, it will stay on for hours and then just cuttoff. Once I logon it will appear to shut off much sooner...

I've never had an issue like this so I'm stumped.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

TK

Click on the first option which is "ms windows XP home edition". Then login to your desktop. From there perform the steps above. We don't need the recovery console yet.

I can not get in to my desktop, it goes through all memory check and all, then window logo comes and on and that is far as i can get. and will re boot itself again.

Hey Romy,

I agree with Steve. I recently had to do a complete re-installation of my operating system on one of my PC's due to a virus. It was doing exactly what your PC is doing. Once I booted the PC up it would constantly reboot itself. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to boot up.

Good luck...

I agree! But since I have a LAN setup at home with a file server, it was simple and quick to re-image the PC. I always backup my files just in case I run into problems like these...In Romy's case it might not be the best option, especially if he doesn't have a method of backing up his files regularly.

Try the following;

Boot Up in Safe Mode
Go Online to www.Stopzilla.com
Download Stopzilla
Have Stopzilla due a free system check
If you have a virus, it will ask you to purchase the software
That should take care of your virus, spyware, adware, etc.

The other option is in windows XP, you can restore it back to a previous date. Windows will automatically erase any new files including viruses and restore your computer as it was on that day. I recommend going back to at least 2 weeks before you had the problem. This may cause some files you recently downloaded to be deleted.

Good Luck
Joseph
