AI's RANT - Owning a PCAR and Paying More???

Postby AsianImage » Sun Apr 22, 2007 1:53 pm

OK Rant On - feel free to agree or call me an idiot.

WHY WHY WHY are things soooo much more expensive SIMPLY because it is a Porsche? As a new P Car owner I am stupified at how much MORE expensive minor little mods are for OUR cars vs. OTHER cars. Seriously...why do we all put up with it? I dont get it...some examples.

My biggest gripe so far that I have seen is..CARBON FIBER PARTS. OMG!
Are you kidding me? Have you seen some vendor's prices for CF mirror covers? or hazard and key trim? This TINY little pieces for crazy money!
How is it..that a CF hood for my car...USED...is around $1000-$1200?? When you can get a BRAND NEW CF Hood for a HONDA ACCORD for $300? Now it does not take Stevie Wonder to see that a 996 hood is SMALLER than an Accord hood...but why the price difference? Same materials..same craftmanship...and LESS Materials on the 996. SAME SAME SAME except I pay triple because I have a P car?

EXHAUST TIPS - are you f'ng kidding me on these? I have recently seen..USED quad tips...for $700?? OMG! What am I retarded? FOR SS ROLLED TIPS? Please go to pepboys and see they make all kinds of tips...why would you have to pay the equivalent of a whole exhaust system for TIPS! MY GOD HELP ME THEY ARE JUST TIPS!!! I am going to experiment one day...and go to my local ghetto muffler shop and see how it would be to create/buy quad tips for my cab. I know it aint gonna be $500 and above....FOR TIPS!!!! But if you owned a Sti or Evo or Integra you can get Ti TIPS for a couple hundred!!! OR LESS! Why oh Why that since these are going on a Porsche they have to cost almost $1000 for TIPS!!!

ALUMINUM PEDALS - should be the SAME PRICE FOR ALL VEHICLES...right? Arent all car pedals either 3 plus dead pedal or 2 plus dead pedal right? Thats its...gas, brake, clutch or just gas brake? Now I can understand more money if you are using BILLET or something like that..but regular Techart or Porsche or China specials...are all the same Aluminum Pedals that go over your rubber ones. Why are Porsche pedals SOOOOOO much more expensive?

I can go on and on...the 3 examples I have listed above illustrate my point. We are all being RAPED...to pay MORE for no other reason than it is for a Porsche. PERIOD.

ok rant off...

I know this may simplify the answer but here it is in short.

IF YOU MANUFACTURE 10,000 ITEMS FOR HONDAS THEN YOUR COST WILL BE MUCH LOW AS THE MARKET IS HUGE!

IF YOU MANUFACTURE FOR LETS SAY 500 ITEMS THEN THE MARKET SLIMS UP AND YOUR COST AND PROFIT % HAS TO GO UP.

Like I said this is the short answer but I hope it helps..... Same thing with techs, the bill is higher since there are less qualified people who are working on these rides...

grrr...I guess. But still...if you are pumping out 5000 CF hoods for a 2002 Civic...you can make 1000 CF hoods for a 996/boxster and still charge LESS than what they are asking for...I dont mind the percentage mark up, like you stated cost vs quantity..but the prices seem waaay out of wack.

ROFLMAO...

AI, Welcome to the big league. Unfortunately, as Ontime stated, you gotta pay to play.

I understand having to pay to play...but I dont have to like it....

when I see "smoked tail lights" for our cars costing $500..and you have same china brands for a honda civic going for $30 for the pair...it just makes me mad. I know it aint going to change I am just mad and not happy about it.

$700 for exhaust tips? Come on...USED ones?

daytrader wrote:I agreed with Eli, Andre about what they said. You should see how expensive to mod. a BMW. Actually, BMW parts are more expensive than Porsche as I compared. When I mod. my Bimmer late last year the price tag is in $11K+. Those were front/rear bumpers, exhaust syst., wheels & tires.

Come down to it if you come to play, you better ready with $$$.

I hate to disagree with you on this one but I need to since I've been in the parts business for such a while.... Porsche year by year will be more expensive, respectively.....

Although the balance will be challenged when you talk about the M3/M5/5 & 7 series Bimmers.....

Overall you can expect higher prices on the Porsche items vs. those Bimmers...... But in all fairness let us compare the M5 with the GT3 on price-point.... Those are compare-able when it comes to playing level on each end of the market.... GT3 still kills...... :)

a normal supercharger is $9k
now for the cayman
ruff wants #35,000
and an off brand is 14,000

Just thing of all the R&D that goes into both.....

Hondas will sell (guessing) 5,000 kits per year ($2,500,000 profit at $500 per unit)
Porsche cars will sell (guessing) 100 kits per year ($50,000 profit at $500 per unit)

Hope this helps, also because Porsche kit builders don't have the purchasing ability of those Hondas by demand they need to pay higher prices for parts.

Now think of how much profit needs to be made to cover the R&D plus production.
