Engine finally home...

Postby Jitters » Mon Mar 10, 2008 1:44 pm

Hey dudes and dudette's...

Finanlly got the engine home Friday. Now I have to complete the disasembly and clean up before I can put her back together. You can see from one of the photo's where the damage occurred on one of the pistons...

Quite a few of the compression rings were shattered or either broken as were several of the oil rings...

Oh well, we'll get her back on the road sometime this year....

Super Awesome! Good luck with that Todd!

I forgot to ask... Do you plan on boring the cyclindar sleeves or just honing it smooth? Boring will require larger pistons and tuning but you would get some more power... not that you needed it in the first place haha

Hey Steve,

I'm having a tough time justifying spending $5K on a whole set when only 2 of them need replacing. My quest is to find 2 which at this point almost seems impossible but I am remaing optimistic and am sure I'll be successful in locating the 2 I need...

Hey Carlos,

I spoke to someone regarding a larger bore but it was recommended that I not exceed what I have now. Which from what I understand is larger than the OEM stats. Currently, I'm running 98mm P/C's. The OEM for the 3.3l is 97mm.

Also, from what was explained to me by the previous owner was that he dynoed the car @ 525 RWHP on 108 Octane fuel. I think that's enough power for me right now buddy...

Technical question: Can Porsche 930 turbo cylinders be bored out or honed? No, because the cylinder have a nikasil coating.
Nikasil is a trademarked electrodeposited oleophilic nickel matrix silicium carbide coating for engine components, mainly piston engine cylinder liners.

Porsche started using this on the 1970 917 race car, and later on the 1973 911 RS. Porsche also used it on production cars, but for a short time switched to Alusil due to cost savings for their base 911. Nikasil cylinders were always used for the 911 Turbo and RS models. Nikasil coated aluminum cylinders allowed Porsche to build air-cooled engines that had the highest specific output of any engine of their time. Nikasil is still used in today's 911s with great success. 8)

i believe 986 boxster have something similar to that right?
i have heard that boxster's engine can not be bored too...
am i correct?

Unfortunatley, Mahle doesn't sell separate pistons, you have to buy the complete set. Pelican has them listed at $5.1K God knows if I went through RUF it would probably be double that...
