2008 Bonneville 100

Postby jorj7 » Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:46 am

The Bonneville 100 Open Road Race was run last weekend in Wendover Nevada.
I had signed up to run the 170 class with an unlimited tech. I was hoping to hit
200+ mph in the time trap. Unfortunately, the MAF boot split on practice morning
and I was out of the race. I was able to pick up a new boot in SLC and install it after
the race for the drive home on Sunday. I'll tell you, it's very disappointing to spend a
year getting the car ready for another run at the B100 where I had blown the engine
and miss it again because of a $20 part... :(

Oh well, the next event is in August at the Pony Express 130. I'll get the car
ready for that and hope to have a good run.

Here are some photos from the event.

True, I was commenting on that to some of the fellow racers. It's better
to have it happen at practice then during the race. The car was still not
running right, I could get up to 151 mph in 3rd gear, but when I shifted
to 4th, the AFR went down to 9.5:1 and the car would booge. I did
several adjustments to the fuel regulator, but the problem got worst. I figure
the split kept getting bigger on each run, and was throwing off the mixture.

At least the car is still together, and I should be able to run in August.

BTW, what lens you used on the photos? Great photography!

Thanks, I used the Canon 70-200 f2.8LIS on the 1D Mark II for most
of the on road shots and the Canon 20D with 17-55 f2.8IS for the wide
angle stuff. I had my assistant using the Canon 350D with the Tamron
17-50 f2.8 or
Canon 35-350 f3.5-4.5L.

Aren,

He had a wicked sounding V8 with headers in that thing. Made quite an
impression leaving the starting line... :)

Hey George,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune but thank God you and the car are okay and can race another day...

Thanks for the photos as well.

Yes, that's correct. My car is geared pretty tall with 2.2 final drive and 26.5" diameter tires.
6,100 rpm in 3rd gear is 151 mph and in 4th it'd be 219 mph. Of course I'd need 20 extra
rwhp to reach that, but I'm working on that :)

That's right. The 90 928S4 only came with a 4 speed automatic. If
you wanted a 5-speed, you had to get the 928 GT. For ORR you usually
stay in the top gear most of the time, so it doesn't matter too much,
but the stock auto can handle ~100 ft-lbs more torque then the manual
so there are advantages to the auto, especially when you're putting out
over 500 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels :)
