Bad smell from an old leather interior, any ideas please?

Postby Lefteris (Athens-Greece) » Mon Aug 13, 2007 1:07 pm

Hello :)
As you know I work on my new/old Porsche project (the 1989 928GT) for almost 6 months now and the full leather interior (and when we say full leather, e v e r y t h i n g is covered with leather from the fuctory), I have cleane it over and over, I have leave it open for 10 days in the garage and now the garage smell bad too!
The smell is like mould but
No moisture
No old food
No pet (dead or alive)
and the smell comes from the leather that looks and feels like new!!!
But the car was seating in a garage for 5 years with close windows!
(full report when the car is finsh, in about 3 weeks)
Any ideas please?

what kind of leather cleaner are you using? Usually after a good cleaning and then some leather conditioner it should be fine. Have you used a leather SOAP? Like the kind they use for horse saddles? If a Horse SADDLE can smell good after...I am sure your interior should be fine.

I would suggest FABREEZE but that is on material.

other fixes are place a tray of kitty litter inside...perferably the kind with charcoal.
or
place a box of baking soda inside
or
mothballs or those closet charcoal pellets

all of the above are designed to ABSORB smells...

last thing..pay for a professional interior detail...where they steam clean and just do everything.

Hope this helps!

A friend on an other forum also told me that an Ozone treatment is the best way to go!
I will try all of your ideas first and if is still smell I will try the Ozone treatment!

Thanks again

I don't think he meant steam clean the leather, just the carpet.

I add some mothballs in and close it for an hour or so, the smell is gone already! :)
After I finsh with all the work I will take a visit to a professional interior detail to make it perfect! :)
Thank you all for the great help!

Great!
Yeah mothballs smell kinda gross but that smell WILL leave...and they absorb whatever smells you have in your car.

Glad it all worked out!
