Shifting by itself ?

Postby riversideC4 » Sun Nov 30, 2008 3:25 pm

Hey Guys'. Looking for some feed back.
I got a 02 911 C4 Cab. Automatic W/tiptronic. 25,278 MI.
In Manual, it will sometimes shift "up" by itself, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th or 5th. It will also shift over from Manual Setting to Automatic (seemingly) by itself. There doesn't seem to be any "detant" between Manual and Automatic. Barely touching the shifter will move it from Manual to Automatic? Even by accident!
Is this normal :?:

My understanding on the manual use of the tip trans is that it will auto shift you if you either red-line or if you are not shifting frequently... So if you sit at a stop light on M it may switch over to Auto without your switch.....

It is to the point where the car is thinking "ok this guy doesn't know what the hell he is doing so I will do it for him before he kills me". But, the shifting if you have been in manual mode and not shifted for a while is new to me. Also, it sounds a little dumb.

Well, here's what I understand.....

While on the lower selector you can stay in manual mode... But if you're in auto and decide to paddle shift and then just stop shifting it will think you forgot and pick up the slack....

Thanks Guys,
Sounds like the automatic shifting may be normal.
Thanks for your responses.
